Sections and Programs

The Department of Radiology continues to expand in areas of clinical service, education, and research. New facilities, new programs, and new faculty abound. The Department is in the middle of the most aggressive expansion of imaging facilities ever at the University of Chicago, and of a magnitude rarely encountered nationwide.

The sub specialized training and practice of our clinical radiologists focuses a wealth of expertise in diagnostic imaging and intervention. The Sections represent the administrative structure of the professional staff, with the Section Heads responsible for all aspects of patient care, quality assurance, teaching and academics within their subspecialties. The Section Chiefs work in conjunction with Dr. Aytekin Oto, Chairman, Dr. Steve Montner, Vice Chair of Operations, and Dr. Paul Chang, Vice Chair of Informatics.

Abdominal Imaging is a specialty of Diagnostic Radiology, providing diagnostic imaging and intervention of abdominal and pelvic disorders. This specialization provides extensive clinical experience for optimal patient care and interactions with medical and surgical subspecialties.

The mission of the Section of Breast Imaging within the Department of Radiology is to provide excellent comprehensive screening and diagnostic breast health care for our patients. Major emphasis is given to top-notch clinical care, participation in national clinical trials to further screening guideline policies, investigation of important laboratory observations that translate into clinical applications, and education and outreach in the neighboring south side community.

The section of Neuroradiology performs imaging of the CNS in both adult and pediatric patients. This includes CT and MR of the brain, spine, head and neck as well as diagnostic angiography and interventional neuroradiology. There is active collaboration with busy neurology, neurosurgery, ENT, and oncology services providing a wide variety of clinical experience.

The Nuclear Medicine Section is proud to offer the full spectrum of general nuclear, cardiac, and molecular imaging exams, from the standard bone and thyroid imaging to the harder to find, such as red cell mass and GFR calculations to all standard and several novel molecular radiotherapies. We also offer a wide variety of pediatric studies, which are supervised by a pediatric-trained staff, and specialize in pediatric renal and tumor imaging and therapy.

Our state of the art PET Center was the first permanent PET/CT center in the Chicagoland area. Since its inception, we have been at the forefront of neurologic, cardiac, and whole body oncologic PET/CT.  As the only center in the region with its own medical cyclotron, the Section of Nuclear Medicine has unparalleled access to a host of novel tracers for both our clinical and research programs (https://voices.uchicago.edu/cyclotron/).  Our high resolution PET/CT camera has been offering the latest in clinical and research imaging for years.  Standard PET tracers such as FDG are of course commonly utilized but we have been amongst the first centers to offer imaging of more specialized tracers such as for prostate cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, and Alzheimer’s Dementia.

Professor of Radiology

The Pediatric Radiology Section performs and interprets imaging studies on children, attempting to achieve the best diagnostic yield at the lowest possible radiation dose and intervention to the patient. We combine compassionate clinical work with high academic standards - performing research and teaching residents, medical students and colleagues. The Section performs an average of 40,000 imaging studies per year.

The Section of Thoracic Imaging provides state of the art imaging and interpretation of thoracic diseases in close collaboration with internists, pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Consultations and second opinions are also available on request for patients that have been imaged at other institutions. The section provides training for residents and fellows in the department of radiology, as well as trainees from other clinical departments.

Interventional radiology (abbreviated IR or sometimes VIR) is a field of medicine in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance (e.g., CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound). Some of these procedures are done to diagnose illness while others are done for treatment purposes. Different imaging modalities available to interventional radiologists enable them to manipulate and guide tiny instruments throughout the body which in many instances avoids more invasive open surgery.
