"Picture a Scientist" Screening and Discussion

In November, the University of Chicago offered free screening of the documentary "Picture a Scientist". Due to high interest and lively follow-up discussions on this important piece, the University agreed to offer additional viewing of the film from December 4 - 10th. The additional viewing opportunity was emphasized by the Department of Radiology Diversity and Inclusion Council, and a departmental Zoom session was held by the council on Monday, December 14th from 5-6 pm to further discuss and probe the relevance, importance, and impact of the film.

This film follows the journey of three prominent women as they discuss their academic careers in STEM-related fields. Many of our university and department members have likely heard of the groundbreaking 1999 MIT Report on women in academic-STEM positions at MIT. The movie discusses how this report came to be and shares some of the more shocking details from its findings. The report may be accessed here.

We all have important individuals in our lives who may have faced/are facing the same challenges – be it a daughter, a mother, a significant other, or a fellow colleague. In highlighting the offering of this film and holding the "de-brief" discussion, the Diversity and Inclusion Council hope that viewers and session participants found the messages in this film to be as compelling as the Council did.
