The Section of Vascular & Interventional Radiology is one of the strongest within the department and all its faculty are nationally recognized for their contributions to interventional radiology – particularly in regards to graduate medical education.
The section is lead by Dr. Brian Funaki (FSIR, FCIRCE, FAHA) who sits on the Society of Interventional Radiology Executive Council. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, and a former editor of Seminars in Interventional Radiology. Dr. Funaki will serve as Program Chair for the upcoming Society of Interventional Radiology 2018 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Jon Lorenz (FSIR) has had a distinguished career as an educator serving as program director of the IR fellowship program at The University of Chicago from 2001 through 2011. He is Chair of the American College of Radiology Education Committee for Interventional and Cardiovascular Imaging. He also serves on the ACR Appropriateness Committee. Dr. Lorenz is creator and editor of the RadCases textbook series that is used by radiology residents and trainees around the world.
Dr. Thuong Van Ha (FSIR) serves as program co-chair of the Society of Interventional Radiology Fellows Spring Practicum. This annual course is attended by fellows from every training program in the country and has been universally lauded by both attendees and program directors. Dr. Van Ha is also serves as Director of Clinical Research at The University of Chicago and sits on the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Dr. Jeff Leef has had a long and productive career in Interventional Radiology. He served as program director prior to 2001 before passing the reigns to Dr. Lorenz. He runs the VIR section of The University of Chicago Radiology Review Course – an annual conference attended by practicing radiologists for continuing medical education.
Dr. Steve Zangan has previously served as Associate Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology residency program at The University of Chicago. He is now the Associate Program Director of the IR/DR residency program. He is chair of the annual American Roentgen Ray Society Case Based Review Course for vascular & interventional radiology. Dr. Zangan is also an Ombudsman at the Pritzker School of Medicine.
Dr. Rakesh Navuluri has been the program director of the IR fellowship program since 2012 and will continue to serve in that capacity until the fellowship program sundowns in 2020. He is the program director of the IR/DR integrated and independent residency programs. He is founder and director of the Midwest Interventional Radiology Medical Student Symposium -- the largest regional IR symposium in the country. Dr. Navuluri also sits on the American Board of Radiology Core Exam Writing Committee.
Dr. Osman Ahmed
Dr. Osman Ahmed is an assistant professor of Vascular and Interventional with special clinical interest in venous thromboembolic disease, complex IVC retrieval, pelvic venous congestion, peripheral vascular disease, men's health, and interventional oncology. He currently serves as social media editor for the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) and sits on the expert panel for vascular imaging for the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria.
Dr. Ahmed also has academic interest in clinical research and editoral review. Aside from publishing in medical journals, he was nominated twice for the JVIR "top reviewer" award.
