Neuroradiology

The section of Neuroradiology performs imaging of the CNS in both adult and pediatric patients. This includes CT and MR of the brain, spine, head and neck as well as diagnostic angiography and interventional neuroradiology. There is active collaboration with busy neurology, neurosurgery, ENT, and oncology services providing a wide variety of clinical experience.

The Department is equipped with five Phillips CT scanners including two sixty four slice and four 16 slice MTCTs. 3-D reconstructions and CTA's are processed on independent work consoles in the viewing area. There are two 1.5T GE MR scanners with echo planar capability. Four Philips 1.5 T MR scanners have been recently installed. Routine clinical spectroscopy, diffusion and perfusion imaging are performed. A dedicated GE 3T MR scanner is used for research in functional imaging, spectroscopy, and clinical research trials. A dedicated neuro-angiography suite with a Philips biplane system with flat panel detectors and full 3D angiography capability is used for neuro-interventional services. A second interventional suite with a biplane Siemans unit is available for diagnostic cerebral angiograms. Interventional cases include balloon dilatation for carotid stenosis and intracranial spasm, carotid stenting, transcatheter therapy for thrombolysis, particulate embolization for tumor and vascular abnormalities as well as occlusion of AVMs using injectable glue, coiling of aneurysms, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and petrosal sinus sampling.

Section members are active in a variety of clinical research projects including: perfusion imaging in the evaluation of intracranial neoplasms; diffusion tensor imaging in the evaluation of intracranial neoplasms, and DTI in multiple sclerosis and other white matter diseases; methods of quantification on multiple sclerosis lesions; and the relationship of multiple sclerosis lesions, cyotokine production and psychologic stress. Other areas of investigation include; hydrocephalus, intracranial pressure and neurocognition; the quantitative evaluation of the relationship between carotid artery calcification and cerebral white matter disease; volume and mass measurement algorithms of carotid artery calcification detected by carotid CT; and functional MRI in pre-operative planning.
